I lifted my coffee cup to my lips and consumed the bittersweet liquid, wincing only a little as it went down. I didn’t like coffee and I was beginning to think maybe no one really did – it became a necessity. A way to ensure we were at least starting our day right.
The sky over Haven was a mixture of orange and red, presenting the sun as it pushed from the ocean to warm and light my sleepy hometown. I don’t know when I learned to appreciate the sunrise so much, but somewhere along these past few years, I did. It was my favorite time of day, the most peaceful time. It was the only moment I’d have to myself until the end of the day when I curled into bed and drifted off to sleep.
This, like my coffee, was bittersweet. I longed for these moments when things got too hectic, but at the same time the silence had a way of being deafening. I found myself longing for the chaos that had become my life if I stayed out even a minute too soon.
